I bought my solid wood furniture a year ago, and now there are cracks on the surface? Did I get scammed and buy a fake? Or is it because I haven't done enough maintenance? Let me tell you: it could be the wood's moisture content that's to blame!
When buying furniture, many of us consumers usually pay attention to the material, style and price, but ignore the moisture content of the wood. However, this is a major factor that affects the quality and life of furniture, especially solid wood furniture.
We all know that wood itself contains moisture, so before making furniture, the wood must be dehydrated and dried. Usually the moisture content of solid wood furniture needs to be controlled within 12% to prevent cracking and deformation.
When purchasing solid wood furniture, you should also consider the "north-south differences." The north has a dry climate, while the south has a humid climate. This difference in average atmospheric moisture content can also affect the lifespan of solid wood furniture. When the air's moisture content is lower than the wood's, the wood shrinks due to moisture loss and evaporation. Conversely, the wood absorbs moisture and expands. Either of these situations can cause the furniture to warp and crack.
For example, if solid wood furniture with a moisture content suitable for the dry climate of Jinan is transported to the humid and rainy Guangzhou for use, the wood will automatically absorb moisture in the air, causing it to deform and crack.
Generally speaking, the moisture content of solid wood furniture should be one to two percentage points lower than the average moisture content of the local air.
But when ordinary consumers buy solid wood furniture, they lack professional testing equipment to measure the moisture content. What can they do? Touch it with your hands. Touch samples that have been placed for a long time, especially the bottom of the furniture and unpainted areas. If it feels damp and cold, the moisture content is generally very high.
