"Return to the South" is a term used to describe a weather phenomenon in southern my country. It mainly occurs when warm and humid air masses quickly counterattack after a cold front moves away, causing temperatures to rise and humidity to increase. When cold surfaces come into contact with these warm and humid air masses, water droplets easily form. This phenomenon occurs as the temperature rises and humidity increases.
Furniture is very easily damaged in humid environments. Since furniture is expensive to buy, it's a pity that its lifespan can be drastically shortened without proper maintenance. So how should we care for our furniture in such weather?
I. Leather Furniture Maintenance:
Genuine leather furniture is mostly made of leather, which hardens when exposed to moisture, making it prone to mold spots, and may even cause deformation or fading. Place leather furniture about one centimeter away from the wall; do not place it against the wall. Place some desiccant inside and around the furniture to absorb moisture.
In addition, waxing leather furniture every six months, or using special mink oil or leather oil to maintain the surface, can prevent and reduce moisture and mold growth. This applies to commonly used genuine leather sofas and chairs.
II. Maintenance of Upholstered Furniture
Upholstered furniture tends to attract dust when damp, so it's essential to first remove surface dust with a small vacuum cleaner to prevent mold growth during humid weather. When damp weather arrives, gently and slowly blow-dry the upholstered furniture with a hairdryer on a low heat setting to remove moisture. This applies to common upholstered sofas and armchairs. Ideally, place a highly absorbent sofa cover on the sofa surface for easier moisture absorption and cleaning.
III. Maintenance of Wooden Furniture
When wooden furniture absorbs moisture, many water droplets appear on the surface. These droplets reappear after being wiped dry, causing the wood to swell, crack, and warp, significantly shortening its lifespan. To clean wooden furniture, apply a specialized cleaner evenly to the surface and then gently wipe it. This will form a protective film that maintains the furniture's shine while preventing moisture damage. Ensure adequate ventilation distance between the furniture and exterior walls or bathroom walls, avoid placing solid wood furniture directly against walls, and install waterproof pads under furniture legs that are prone to absorbing water.
